A Level Examination Results 2008

Hereford Cathedral School Sixth Form students celebrated A level success with nearly a quarter of all candidates achieving A grades in all the subjects that they took.  In total 42% of all grades achieved were A grade and 71% of all grades awarded were grade B or above. Of the seven pupils who gained four A grades is former Bishop of Bluecoat’s School pupil and Ogden Scholar, Wilson Kung.  A number of other students in receipt of scholarships and bursaries had plenty to smile about when they received their results.

For the third year running, and in the same year that Mr Wilkes, Head of Art, received a distinction in The Guardian Teacher of the Year Award, students studying A level Art have come amongst the top in the country by winning examination board prizes.   Sarah Boulton and Miranda Harris scored one of the top five marks countrywide in the Art and Design (Fine Art) examination taken by a total of 5291 candidates.

Angus Rawstorne and Will Spencer achieved four A grades securing their places at Cambridge University and, together with David Lifely and Felix Summers who also achieved four A grades, will be studying Engineering at University. Charlotte Wood, who earlier in her sixth form career had the honour of carrying the RAF Standard at our Nation’s Remembrance Day Service in the Albert Hall, leaves HCS with four A grades together with a Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Headmaster, Paul Smith, said, “ I am delighted with these results, they reflect hard work and determination by students and teachers alike.  I am particularly pleased that students who achieve so much in music, sport, drama, Duke of Edinburgh, debating, the Combined Cadet Force and more, can also excel in their academic subjects.  It is a combination of what happens in and out of the classroom, together with the focused pastoral support that we are able to offer, which has enabled over 90% of this year’s students to achieve the grades that they required for the University of their choice.”

GCSE Examination Results 2008

Two students from Hereford Cathedral School achieved straight A* grades in their GCSE Examinations.  Felicity Hunter-Choat and David Watson each secured twelve A* grades.  Five students gained maximum marks in their GCSE Art Exam: David Watson, Polly Haydn Jones, Georgia Asson, Emma Lewis and Rachael Hitchiner.

In addition the following fourteen students achieved all A* or A grades:

India Benjamin, Emily Kemp, Georgina Parry, Michael Copley-May, Megan Corder, Theo Samsworth, James Penney, Daniel Phillips, Jared Barazetti-Scott, Ursula Harris, Miranda Otter-Barry Ross, Harrison Probert, Miranda Timmerman, Rosie Walsh

A third of all Hereford Cathedral students achieved grade B or above in each of their exams, whilst a quarter of all grades achieved were A* and 83% were either A*, A or B.

Twenty three Year 10 pupils took their Maths GCSE exams a year early and nineteen were awarded A* grades and four were awarded grade A.

Following their excellent A level results last week, three sixth Form students, E-J Goode, Samantha Walters and Felix Summers received the news that they had also achieved an A* in GCSE Japanese.

Mr Paul Smith, Headmaster of Hereford Cathedral School said: “These are excellent results and follow the outstanding results achieved last week at AS and A level.  I am delighted that the hard work of teachers and pupils has been justly rewarded; congratulations to all who have done so well this year.”

Past Results

At Hereford Cathedral School the vast majority of the Sixth Form take 4 AS levels in their Lower Sixth and then 3 full A levels in their Upper Sixth. The results illustrate significant achievement, well above the national averages and are without question a credit to the school, staff, parents and pupils alike.

Although we are very proud of the examination successes of our pupils, we believe that examination statistics are only one criteria of educational success. We therefore advise that the following raw statistics are interpreted with caution.

However, it is true and appropriate to say that the national benchmark statistics are clearly demonstrating that our sixth formers gain significant added value over their two years within our Sixth Form, placing Hereford Cathedral School in the top ten percent of colleges and schools nationally.
